Oww, My Wallet!

Uncategorized, finance, home improvement, home life, mountain living No Comments »

Today has been a rough day on my poor little wallet. First, Hubby sent me to the hardware store to pick up some insulation. That’s why the water froze- because the insulation over the pipes was missing in two places. So after I took Pumpkin to school, I headed off to the hardware store.

I thought I would pick up a small roll for $15 or $20, since we didn’t need much. But once I got there, I discovered that the only small rolls that they had in that price range were the wrong kind. I ended up having to get a huge pack and pay $55 for it. Yikes!

Hubby’s tags need to be renewed, so I instructed him to put enough money in the bank to cover it yesterday morning so that I could do it online. He put the money in, but when I tried to renew I was informed that we owed property taxes on his truck and therefore could not. So after picking Pumpkin up from school, I went to the tax office to pay it. There went another $77.

I went by the store and picked up a couple of things that we really needed, and hightailed it home. Maybe if I stay put I can hold on to the tiny amount of money I still have.

Pagerank

Internet issues, Uncategorized, blogging No Comments »

Pagerank is either a big deal or a meaningless, arbitrary number, depending on who you ask about it. In my personal (far from professional) opinion, it carries some weight with the search engines, but it’s not the be-all and end-all. It’s still nice to see it go up though. :)

Google did a pagerank update recently, and when I started hearing that it was complete I checked the ranks for my websites. One had gone from 3 to 4, one from 0 to 3, and the other two (this one included) were showing 0 just as they always had. I was a bit disappointed, because this one had been around as long as the one that went from 0 to 3 and has just as many, if not more, incoming links.

Well, this morning I was tinkering around with the other zero site, and noticed that it is now showing up as a 2. That got me curious… so I checked this here blog, and it is now showing a pagerank of 3. Woo-hoo! I do hope those are the final numbers.

The downside is that I checked the one that had gone up from 3 to 4, and now it appears to be back at a 3. The other one is still at a 3 though. Is all that enough numbers to thoroughly confuse you, or should I throw out some more? ;)

I do need to work on getting more links to my sites, not just for pagerank purposes but to make sure that they are seen. So if you are looking to exchange links, let me know. I want links that are relevant to my sites, so I need stuff that is of interest to work at home moms or moms on a budget.

All Froze Up

I am home from work once again today. We got a little bit of snow and ice last night, and I think calling off school might have actually been warranted this time. But it sucks that I’m having to miss all this work. I hope I get my last W2 soon so I can at least get my taxes back.

Last night was the coldest night we’ve had this winter, and colder than any we had last winter. This morning we came to the realization that half of our water was frozen. And most of what was frozen this morning still is now. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Our bathroom: Hot water in the sink and hot and cold water in the tub frozen. Not sure about the toilet, because it needs repair so we don’t use it anyway.
  • Kitchen: Hot water frozen, cold water OK.
  • Pumpkin’s bathroom: Hot and cold water in sink working. Water to toilet was frozen this morning but has since thawed out. Not sure about the tub, because it is full of old toys we need to get rid of. (It is cracked, so we also don’t use it.)

What I’m having a hard time figuring out is why the hot water is working in Pumpkin’s bathroom sink, but none of the rest of it is. That bathroom is farther from where the water comes into the house and from the water heater than our bathroom and the kitchen. But then again I’m not a plumber, am I? By the time this is all over, I bet I’ll be wishing I was. :)

Mission Accomplished

Uncategorized, home life No Comments »

I set a goal for today, and I actually accomplished it! Woo-hoo!!! Please resist your urge to pat me on the back, because that’s kind of hard to do over the computer.

What was my goal, you ask? To make my office look like an office again… or at the very least like something other than a crowded storage space. It took me the biggest part of the day, but three trash bags and lots of blood, sweat, and tears later, I’m no longer ashamed of the room where I spend a goodly portion of my time.

Some of Pumpkin’s clothes that she has outgrown and I need to get rid of are still in here, and I didn’t do much to the closet. But I can actually see my desk, as well as the floor. Impressive, no?

Basketball

I went to the school today to sign Pumpkin up for basketball. It just doesn’t seem possible that she’s big enough to be doing such things.

I need to talk to my boss about being off on Saturday mornings for her games. I don’t know how well that will go over, but it shouldn’t be too big of a problem. I get quite a bit of time off on the weekends already.

In a way I dread having to get her to practice and games and all, but I know that it will be good for her. She needs to get involved in something with other kids outside of regular school, and she has been asking about playing basketball every since school started. So I hope she enjoys it.

Winter Has Arrived

Yesterday we got the biggest snow we’ve had so far this winter. Actually it was the only one that actually amounted to anything. We had one other small snow that stuck, and it barely covered the grass.

There was about 2 inches of snow in my back yard when it was all said and done. There’s still quite a bit back there, because the sun doesn’t hit much. But looking out the front door, the places where the sun does hit are virtually snow-free.

School let out early yesterday, and was called off today. That translated into me having to leave work early and not going in at all today. I wish we could find another babysitter. My inlaws live in a place that is pretty treacherous when it snows, so we can’t take her there if the roads are bad. Hubby’s day off was supposed to be today, but his boss made him come in. So all that left was me.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times this winter: I’ll be so glad when it’s over!

De-Lurking Week

I would have posted about this earlier in the week, but I just found out about it. Better late than never!

This week is De-Lurking Week. It’s a week dedicated to commenting on blogs, rather than just reading and moving on. And it must be your lucky day, because you’re visiting a blog right now! There’s no time like the present to get started! ;)

Can’t figure out what to comment about? Tell me your middle name, or your favorite color, or where you really were on November 16th at 7:45 pm. As long as it’s somewhat family-friendly and not spam, go for it!

Don’t forget to spread the word and collect some comments on your own blogs. If you’d like a cool button such as the one pictured above, there are several to choose from here. Happy commenting!

What is Net Neutrality?

Internet issues, Uncategorized, blogging No Comments »

I had heard of net neutrality before today, but I never knew just what it was or how it affected me. But I saw a link to the above video on a forum, so I took a look. Now I know that it is a very important thing that needs to be protected.

Net neutrality basically boils down to all websites being equally accessible, whether they are owned by huge corporations or the high school kid next door. As is par for the course with something that fair and good, big business is trying its best to obliterate it. The big guys in telecommunications want to set up a so-called “fast lane” to the Internet, one that is only accessible to site owners who are willing and able to pay big bucks to be on it. For a better explanation than I can give, watch the video above and visit SaveTheInternet.com. There you can learn what you can do to help stop this garbage.

Happy New Year

Uncategorized, home life No Comments »

It’s finally 2007! I wasn’t sure 2006 was ever going to end, but it has, and now I’m wondering just where it went so fast.

It was a rough year for me and my family. My biggest accomplishment, finding a less stressful job, was in a way also my biggest failure. That’s because what I really wanted was to work for myself from home, but that didn’t work out. And my high-stress job was also much better paying than the one I have now. So I guess I kind of traded stress on the job for stress over paying the bills. But I’m certainly no stranger to scraping by, since Hubby and I did just that for our first three years together.

I hope this year brings us more money, but more importantly lots of happiness. I am very fortunate to have a loving husband who is also a wonderful father, and a sweet daughter. Those are two things that money just can’t buy. It would just be nice if I could spend less time worrying about money and more time enjoying my family.
