Hating My Hair

Posted on 19th November 2007 by Kristy in Beauty,Uncategorized

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with my hair. It’s frizzy and stubborn, but it’s also thick and has a small amount of natural curl. I get more compliments on my hair than anything, and yet sometimes I just want to shave it all off.

Over the past few weeks it has developed this extremely annoying tendency to pouf out right next to my temples. Kind of like a lot of people wore their hair in the eighties, except they had to coax it and spray it to make it stay like that. While I might have appreciated it back then, it’s driving me nuts now.

I am a big advocate of wash-and-wear hair. As stubborn as my hair has always been, it just takes way too much effort to get it to do what I want it to. So for many years now, I’ve worn it all one length, and done little more than put a little gel in it to keep the frizz down and let it dry naturally. Up until recently, it has worked out nicely most of the time.

Any suggestions on what to do about my little unwanted wings? I know I could have my hair straightened or permed, but I swore off chemical treatments long ago and don’t want to go back to them. But something is going to have to give.

Nothing Like a Little Rock and Roll to Get You in the Christmas Spirit

Posted on 18th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, holidays, music

I am so not looking forward to Christmas this year. But I was browsing around at some stuff online, and I ran across a couple of things that made me smile.

Christmas music is usually one of my least favorite things about Christmas. Most of it is either boring or kids’ stuff. The kids’ stuff I can usually tolerate, the boring stuff not so much. Thankfully some of my metal heroes from the eighties have come to the rescue and put out some rockin’ Christmas tunes.

Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas came out last year, and I’ve been dying for it every since then. And this year, there’s a new compilation with a whole slew of hair bands: Monster Ballads XMas. I want em both!!!

Help Joe and Win Dough!

Posted on 17th November 2007 by Kristy in Contests,Uncategorized, fun stuff

I’m a poet and I didn’t know it! Yeah, I always hated that saying too.

I wanted to share a little contest that’s going on with my dear readers. You see, MyBlogLog is having a contest to see which blog can gain the most community members. There are some pretty awesome prizes at stake. But that’s not the contest I’m here to tell you about.

You see, this guy by the name of Joe is having a contest of his own to help him win the MyBlogLog contest. All you have to do is go join his communities, drop a comment on his blog, and you are entered to win $100. How easy is that? Plus, if you post about it on your blog (kinda like I’m doing here), you get 10 more entries.

So head on over and join for a chance to win some extra Christmas cash!

Favorite Thing #5: Cranberry Trail Mix

Posted on 17th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, food and drink, home life

I know it’s been forever since I did a Favorite Things post. Guess it’s not going to be a daily thing after all, huh?

Anyhoo, we got Pumpkin’s Girl Scout nut order in today. We bought four things. Wouldn’t have gotten that many, but she needed to sell that many more to get a badge. You know how it goes.

One of the things I ordered is some Cranberry Nut Mix. I opened it up about three hours ago, and as of right now it’s almost half gone. And I’m the only one who’s touched it.

I’ve always loved trail mix, but this stuff is freaking awesome. I’m thinking about telling Hubby to hide it from me. But then I’d probably bust into the pecan clusters. I guess the Cranberry Nut Mix is the lesser of the two evils.

Google Alternatives Part 2

Posted on 17th November 2007 by Kristy in Internet issues,Uncategorized

I just found the answer to my own question about alternatives to Google. Gevil.org, one of my new favorite blogs, has a big honkin’ list of Google Alternatives. There are other places to search, get email, blog, and do anything else that you’ve been doing with Google. They may not all be concentrated in the same place, but many of the sites offer multiple services.

Other than searching, the only ties I can think of that I have to the big evil G are my Blogger blog. I started it before Google took Blogger over, and I still post on it on occasion. But they’ve taken its PageRank down from a 3 to N/A anyway, so I’m considering phasing it out. Once life calms down a bit for me, I’m thinking about starting a new WordPress blog anyhow.

I also frequently use YouTube videos in my posts for WebTVHub, but that’s somewhat unavoidable. I can’t pass over a great video just because of where it’s hosted (unless the host is so incredibly slow that it won’t load properly). Hopefully one day the tide will turn and there will be other video sites that can give them a run for their money. Other than the fact that it’s part of Google now, I like YouTube, but I’ve had it up to here with Google and would prefer not to patronize them any more than absolutely necessary.

Thanksgiving Plans

Posted on 17th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, holidays, home life

Sometimes I just don’t get Hubby. I love him to death, but I just don’t understand him.

My mom had invited us up for Thanksgiving. I asked him if he wanted to go, and he said maybe. I told him I needed a yes or no answer, because I needed to let her know. He begrudgingly said “I guess.”

A couple of days later, my mom called while I wasn’t here. He talked to her, and I called her back the next day. She said Hubby had said that we were coming up. So he had made a decision. Or so I thought.

I mentioned it to him, and he said he didn’t remember saying that we would come up. Now he keeps saying that Pumpkin and I can go. I’m about ready to buy a turkey for the sole purpose of flogging him with it.

I have already decided that I’m not going to stay for long. I just want to go up there, have dinner with my whole entire family (meaning mom, brother and sister and their families, and Hubby and Pumpkin), visit for a short while, and come back home. I don’t think that’s too much to ask on Thanksgiving. Normally I would just take Pumpkin and go up to visit Mom, but I’d like to have everyone I consider family with me for a few lousy hours on Thanksgiving.

It wouldn’t kill Hubby to indulge me. I fully intend to get back in time to go to his parents’ with him if he wants to, even though I would rather not. I think he’s got it in his head that I’m going to want to stay so long that we need to bring along the luggage. But I don’t want to do that any more than he does.

Sites for Sale… Maybe

Posted on 16th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, blogging

I’m considering selling a couple of my websites. I haven’t made a final decision yet, but I’m seriously thinking about it. Here’s the info on them if anyone wants to try to convince me. :)

TBA Deals- I’m pretty sure I’m ready to let go of this one. This is the first real website I owned. I didn’t start it myself, it was around for a few years before I bought it from another work at home mom. But I rehauled the whole thing to work with CSS, and added some new content. It made me a decent amount of money for a while, but I’ve gotten so busy with my writing work that I haven’t been able to devote the time to it that I should. It comes with several ebooks to sell, there are directories that I sell advertising in, and I’ve made some money with affiliate programs on it. It was a PR 3 before Google started acting dumb, but as of right now it’s showing up as a 0.

The Work at Home Scam Blog- This one I’m not sure whether I’m ready to let go or not. It’s a blog, but I had big plans to add more stuff and make it a full-fledged site. Again, my writing work got in the way. The blog is a total labor of love- I haven’t made a red cent off of it. But it has some well-researched content and draws a good amount of traffic for a blog that is not updated frequently. Even after all of the PR mess, it is currently showing a 3. If someone wanted to make a profit from it, they certainly could.

So there they are. I’m not ready to put them up for auction yet, but if anyone is interested email me at kristy at awahmsblog dot com for more info and I’ll be happy to discuss them with you.

Broke at Christmas

Posted on 16th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, holidays, home life

It seems like every year at Christmas, we’re flat broke. I was hoping it wouldn’t be that way this year, but from the looks of things it’s going to.

It’s not like I had grand plans of going out and buying everyone Ebel watches. But I had hoped to be able to get everybody at least a little something. When you can’t pay the bills, though, it’s hard to go Christmas shopping.

At least Pumpkin won’t be empty-handed. Some awesome stuff arrived on my doorstep for her the other day. I’ll share more about that later.

No Signal

Posted on 16th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, mountain living

It’s hard to get a cellular signal out here in the boonies where I live. If someone comes over and needs to use their cell phone, or if our power is out, the only place where we have any luck is right outside our back door.

Sometimes Hubby and I leave our cell phones on in the house, but it is always by accident. It’s impossible to talk on them in here. On occasion one of them will ring, but there’s little point in even answering it.

Hubby left his on the other day, and it rang. He answered, and it was his cousin, who owed him money. He couldn’t hear a thing he was saying, and when he tried to call him back on the house phone he got no answer.

It’s times like those when it would be nice to have a cell phone booster. Or even better, to not live so far from a cellular tower.

Everybody’s Sick

Posted on 16th November 2007 by Kristy in Uncategorized, health, home life

Hubby had to go to the doctor again today, because he has been coughing up yucky yellow stuff. I figured that he had strep like me and Pumpkin, but now I’m not so sure.

The surgeon put him on PrevPac, a regimen that involves taking four pills in the morning and four in the evening. Hubby hates to take meds anyway, so by the time he gets through swallowing all of those plus Tums for instant relief and Tylenol for pain, he’s feeling like he needs to go in for drug treatment. So he didn’t want to go to the doctor today, but I wanted them to get to the bottom of it so we could quit passing it back and forth.

But the doctor didn’t even do a strep test like I had hoped, he just said that was probably what it was and that the antibiotics in the PrevPack would take care of it. I thought they were weak antibiotics, but the doctor said they were pretty strong. And that’s what has me wondering.

Hubby didn’t start the coughing and stuff until a few days ago, after he had been on the PrevPac for several days. How on earth could he have gotten strep with all of those antibiotics in his system? And Pumpkin’s doctor said the strep just barely showed up on her test, so could she have possibly read it wrong? She’s not doing much better now, nor am I, after being on antibiotics for several days. Could we all have a virus or something?

I’m going to shut up now. I’m not a doctor, and I don’t claim to be one. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, that’s all.
