Top 10 Things I Love About My New Home

Posted on 14th April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized, home life

As I mentioned in a previous post, there are things that I love about my new home and things I hate about it. I’d like to take this opportunity to brag a little about the things I love. Without further ado, here are the top ten things I love about it (in no particular order):

  1. The windows. They are apparently rather old, but I adore the way they’re made. The storm windows are on the outside, then the screens (which you can open and close), and then the regular windows are on the inside. They lock securely, so no worries about someone breaking in through them. I guess that could be a problem when we lock the keys inside, as we tend to do way too often, though.
  2. The layout. It’s compact, which makes it pretty easy to heat. And there is only a tiny bit of hall space. I hate long hallways, because they are just space that you can’t really do anything with.
  3. The sliding glass door. I’ve always wanted one. Hubby hates it, and we need to get it fixed so it won’t come off track so much, but I love it anyway.
  4. My office. You knew that was coming, didn’t you? :) It’s not huge, but it’s about twice the size of my old one. I can actually put my corner computer desk in the corner!
  5. Peace and quiet. There’s not another house in sight, and there is little traffic on this road. We don’t have to listen to people pitching a fit about everything or nothing (yes, I’m talking about you, former landlady and your daughter), and if we so desired, we could probably throw the party of the century without any complaints. Not gonna happen, but it’s nice to know that we have that option.
  6. Plenty of storage space. We have a partial basement and a detached garage. We need to find out what is keeping the basement so damp and do some work on the garage, but once that’s all squared away, we can have room to store just about anything we want. So if Hubby decides he wants a canoe, or I decide to go shopping for treadmills, space won’t be a concern.
  7. The covered porch. When it’s warm, I’ll be able to sit outside, rain or shine. I haven’t sat outside and watched it rain in years, so I’m gonna love that.
  8. The kitchen. It’s not terribly large, but I like the way it’s laid out. There can actually be two or three people in there without everyone bumping into each other. I’ve lived in one place with a kitchen so small that it spilled out into the entryway on one side and the living room on the other, and our last place had an island kitchen that was cute but somewhat cramped. So I’m loving having a normal kitchen.
  9. The view. There are mountains all around, which is pretty standard in this area. But there is a nice view out front that I’m sure will be absolutely breathtaking in the fall.
  10. The fact that the home and the land are ours. No one can tell us what to do, nor can anyone make us move. As long as we abide by the law and pay our house payments, we’re free to do as we please here.

So there you have it: The top ten things I love about our new home. I must get to work now, but I’ll be back later with the top 10 things I don’t like.

Accessorizing

Posted on 11th April 2008 by Kristy in fashion

Before I got married, and for a short time afterward, I was heavily into fashion accessories. I wasn’t the type to wear a bunch of heavy gold chains and rings Mr. T-style, though. I liked some bold pieces, but I was always careful not to overdo it. Unless you consider my multiple ear piercings (six in one ear, five in the other) overdoing it.

I pierced my own bellybutton once, and wore a simple beaded hoop in it until the hole got torn badly and I had to let it grow up. I adored sterling silver, and owned several silver rings, particularly thumb rings. And when it was sunny out, I often sported a pair of shades. I owned several pairs of both trendy and vintage sunglasses.

When I met Hubby, I was rarely seen without accessories. But he wasn’t crazy about all of my earrings, so I started wearing fewer of them. Eventually I started wearing less and less jewelry, until I was usually wearing none except my diamond engagement ring.

Now I occasionally don a necklace, bracelet, or pair or two of earrings, but most of the time I just don’t bother. I get tired of the same accessories after a while, and I haven’t been able to justify spending money on new ones for a long time. And maybe I’m getting old, but it’s just not a big deal to me any more. I no longer feel naked without a few pounds of jewelry on.

The Joy of Moving

Posted on 11th April 2008 by Kristy in home life

Moving is one of my least favorite things to do. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that we own our own home and the land that goes with it now. But picking up and moving, especially with very little time to do it in, is a real pain.

I’m finding all sorts of things that I didn’t even realize we had. We went back and got the stuff out of the storage building a couple of days ago, and it was unreal how much stuff we found in there. There were new oil filters and spark plugs, some porcelain dolls, some unknown electronic devices (HDMI switches, maybe?), all sorts of goodies. I also found three funnels, which was rather amusing considering how many times we’ve needed a funnel but couldn’t find one.

I still have a good little bit of unpacking to do. Most of it is stuff from my office, and things that go in the entertainment center. I’ve put that off because we haven’t decided where exactly we want to put it permanently. I also need to wash up some rarely used pots, pans, and food storage containers and get them put up. I still have my work cut out for me, but I’ll get it all done eventually.

I’m Baaaaack!

Posted on 11th April 2008 by Kristy in home life

Did you miss me? Well, I missed you!

Hopefully my scheduled posts made my absence a little less painful. ;)

Since I have yet to get a laptop so that I can take advantage of the local wi-fi hotspots, I had planned on doing some blogging from the library while I was without Internet at home. But those plans fell through. It wasn’t because I didn’t try, though. I went up there late last week to check my email and shoot out a post or two, but was greeted with a sign on the door. The sign informed me that the library was closed, and that it would reopen in a temporary location on Monday of this week so they could do renovations. Isn’t that just ducky?

So I went back on Monday, and was greeted with another sign. This sign said that the reopening had been postponed until Wednesday. I began to have spasms.

They called yesterday and told me that my DSL was operational. I jumped for joy, then realized that it wouldn’t do me any good unless I went out and got a phone jack for my office, and then I would have to wait for someone to help me install it. So off to the store I went, and I got a phone jack and some line. I also got a 50 foot phone cord, so that I could hook my modem up to the phone line in the kitchen until we got the phone jack installed. Then I rushed home and reassembled my desk, hooked up my computer, and basked in the warm glow of the computer screen.

I had to take Pumpkin to t-ball practice, and we ended up not getting back in until pretty late. So I decided to put blogging and writing off until today. But now, here I am. It’s good to be back.

The Beauty of Outdoor Fountains

Posted on 9th April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized

If chosen correctly, there is nothing quite as breathtaking as a towering outdoor fountain. Without a doubt, your plants, herbs, and/or flowers are the foundation of your garden; but it may never feel complete without the proper furniture accent. Outdoor fountains are the perfect choice. Gardens should teem with life, and nothing enlivens an environment like the tranquil sounds of trickling water. While stunning flowers will please the eye, an outdoor fountain will satisfy your soul’s yearning for the sounds of nature. Try Fountaincrafters.com. You may wonder how you ever had a garden without one.

Why I’m Not a Web Designer

Posted on 7th April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized, technology

A couple of years ago, I was considering becoming a web designer. I’ve always enjoyed tinkering with computers, and I had dabbled in it a little. I seriously thought about going back to school for it, but then I realized that my calling was to be a writer. I still like to play around with HTML and CSS on my sites, but just don’t think I have the motivation to learn all I need to know to do it for someone else.

Over the last few decades, the advent of the internet is arguably the most important change in contemporary society. It is ubiquitous and irreplaceable in our modern world. Yet, very few people understand the nuances of ecommerce website design. The vast majority of companies are way overpriced, and don’t offer a product that is worth the cost. Website design is crucial; however, it need not break your bank. Elitesitedesigns.com is a professional, creative, and fairly priced company that can offer you the website of your dreams without squandering your life savings in the process.

On My Wish List: A Massage Chair

Posted on 5th April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized

Massage chairs have a come a long way in the past few years. As massage therapy has gained popularity, a lot more people have also started to see the health benefits of a massage chair. They’re not as effective as a massage therapist of course, but massage chairs today are surprisingly advanced, and they can be a good substitute for expensive and inconvenient massage therapy sessions.

Today’s shiatsu massage chairs, as they are now known, have small rollers or nodes that act like the hands of a massage therapist, imitating the kneading and deep tissue tapping movements used by therapists. These shiatsu massage chairs are capable of a wide range of functions, and can be adjusted for individual bodies. No two people are alike, and advanced software allows these massage chairs to actually adjust for various body sizes and shapes.

Some of these shiatsu massage chairs cost up to $7,000, and with prices like that you may think that the people buying massage chairs are all super-wealthy individuals. That’s partially true, many of the “luxury” shiatsu massage chairs are intended not for health care but simply for fun and relaxation. However, since these chairs are such an effective treatment for various diseases, these chairs are also purchased by people of more modest means. Compared with surgery and prescription drugs, even a $3,000 massage chair can be an economical medical treatment for those on a budget.

Ready to Go Camping

Posted on 4th April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized,home life,mountain living,recreation

I’ve gotten a taste of the warmer weather, and now I’m ready to do my favorite thing to do in the summer: Go camping!

I know it’s not quite that warm yet, but the beautiful sunshine that keeps peeping through the clouds has given me the fever. I hope we get to go at least a few times this year. Last year we didn’t get to go much because I was working on weekends, but this year I’m setting my own schedule all the way. As long as I don’t have deadlines to worry about, I can pick up and go camping whenever Hubby has the time.

This time around, I’ll have to take some pictures and post them. The place where we’ve been camping is too beautiful not to share.

My Tiny Bathroom

Posted on 3rd April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized, home improvement, home life

The bathroom in our new house is very, very tiny. Once we get all of the important stuff done, I’d like to make it bigger. I’m not all that picky over bathrooms, but this one is about the size of a postage stamp. It will take a lot of getting used to, especially since our old master bath was rather large.

I’m thinking we could knock down one of the walls and rebuild it to make the bathroom a few feet larger, and maybe spruce it up a bit. As it is, there is just enough room for functionality, and none left over for style.

If you are redesigning a bathroom and you haven’t considered the addition of a bathroom vanity, you are missing out on the easiest, most flexible way to make your house look incredible. Every piece of a vanity set is customizable; but if you want to go the easy route, simply choose a set that sets your imagination ablaze. Whether your décor is traditional or ultramodern, Tradewindsimports.com offers a selection of bathroom vanities that will more than meet your needs. You will easily find a vanity that sets your imagination ablaze from the incredible array of choices.

Pumpkin’s Report Card

Posted on 2nd April 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized, home life, kids

Pumpkin brought home her report card the other day, and I was blown away! At the beginning of the year, she wasn’t doing very well. She was having to bring her classwork home because she wasn’t even trying to do it in class, and she was behind on her reading. For a long time things remained the same, and I was becoming pretty discouraged.

I did my best to help her, but you know how that goes sometimes. It was like she just wasn’t interested. But eventually things started to improve. She quit bringing as much work home, and her reading got better. Last time report cards went out, her grades had improved quite a bit. She even got an award for it.

This report card was awesome. She got all O’s (outstanding) on her behavior and work habits. She also was up to par or above in every single subject. And her reading? She’s on a level that is not expected of them until mid-second grade!

Her teacher this year has made a big difference. Everyone says she’s tough, and I won’t disagree with them. But I think that’s just what Pumpkin needed- someone who wouldn’t just let her slide by.
