Hubby and I went to his great-aunt’s house a couple of days before Christmas, and her neighbor came over to play cards with us. She brought her digital camera, and was showing me a bunch of pictures of her dog’s birthday party. Yes, that’s right, she had a birthday party for her dog.

I guess some people do that. Maybe a lot of people do that. But to me it just seems weird. I’m a dog lover and all, but of all the dogs I’ve had throughout the years, I don’t think I’ve every thrown a birthday party for one. I’m not sure I’ve even known any of their birthdays.

I suppose it all goes back to how I was raised. When I was young, we always had dogs, but we didn’t keep them in the house. My parents would let my sister’s dog come in sometimes when it was cold out, but most of the time they were outdoors. I finally talked them into letting me get an indoor dog when I was a teenager, and I’m still not sure how that happened. But in most cases, pets just weren’t considered an integral part of the family.

Maybe I’m going about things all wrong. Maybe I should be having parties for our dogs, and letting them invite their friends over for sleepovers. Maybe I should be getting term life insurance quotes on them. Okay, maybe that’s a little extreme, but to me so is a birthday party. To each his own, I guess. If you have the money and want to have a birthday party for your dog, why not?

I failed to mention this, but Pumpkin’s smallest puppy got run over last week. I miss the poor fellow something awful, and so does she. We both cried a lot of tears over him.

But a few days ago, we got a new furry friend. Her name is Precious, and she’s a one-year-old Pomeranian. And she is a very sweet, very beautiful girl. We have all fallen in love with her, including Hubby, who usually doesn’t like housedogs.

Precious was Pumpkin’s early birthday present, and she was tickled pink with her. But you know what they say about Poms- they get attached to one person in particular. And that person has already been established as me. She follows me everywhere I go, lays beside my chair while I work, and jumps in my lap every chance she gets. If I’m up stirring around, she’ll curl up with someone else who’s available, but other than that she is my shadow.

Precious is a very picky dog. She won’t touch the food we feed the others, so we’re going to have to find something else for her. There’s a new pet shop in town that I hear sells everything from hamsters to horse supplies, so maybe they’ll have a good selection of food to choose from. Maybe they can even suggest something for her.

We still talk about Tater Tots a lot. He was certainly a unique little creature, and no dog could ever take his place. But we’re very happy to have Precious as part of our family.

After writing my previous post, I realized that I haven’t even written about the puppies. Oops.

I might have mentioned the Walker at some point, but I know I haven’t gone into detail. She was given to us by a friend of Hubby’s. Her name is Anna, and she’s a beautiful dog. But as you may have gathered, she’s not the brightest crayon in the box. But Walkers aren’t exactly known for their intelligence. She’s a sweetheart and all, I just wish she would learn to get in her house when she needs to instead of standing out in the rain and barking.

The other puppy is a mutt, looks like he might be some kind of toy terrier mix. Pumpkin named him Tater Tots, and I have yet to figure out why, but whatever. He’s mostly black with tan on his chest, feet and above his eyes. And he has absolutely stolen my heart. We’re having to keep him on the front porch temporarily, because he has a little bit of mange. I think it’s the hereditary kind, which isn’t transmissible, but I don’t want to take any chances. But I found an herbal remedy that is supposed to be very good, and I’m going to try it on him. Once that’s cleared up, the fun of bringing him in and housetraining him will begin.

I’m debating on whether to crate train or try pee pads. If I decide to crate train him, I hope I can get away with just using a cardboard box. I can get one of those for free at the store down the road where we got our moving boxes. Maybe if I put something soft for him to lay on in there he will be okay with it.

So there’s the dirt on the doggies. I would post some pictures, but I have yet to take any. I’ll try to get around to that soon.
