What’s Wrong With My Computer?

Posted on 17th September 2009 by Kristy in home business, stupid computer

I’ve been having Internet trouble again. This time I called tech support, and we established that I was getting an IP address, but I couldn’t ping anything. It’s not the modem, because I tried two different ones. And besides that, they both work when I hook them up to my old computer.

I managed to get a couple of things done on the old machine this morning, and in the meantime I ran virus and malware scans on the new one. Both found nothing. I had installed Firefox on my old machine and downloaded Open Office so I could get some work done on it, but then I decided to try the new one again because it’s so much faster. That time, I connected with no problem. Strange.

I don’t know what’s going on here, but it’s driving me nuts. It wouldn’t be such a big deal if I were just using my Internet to compare acne products, but I need it to work so I can make a living. I guess I’ll try to get caught up on my work, and then do some more searching online to see if I can find out what the problem might be. Maybe I’ll see if someone at one of those tech forums can help me. And if all else fails, maybe I’ll contact the computer manufacturer.

If there are any computer whizzes out there who have any ideas, a comment would be much appreciated. I’d be happy to link to a site or do some writing for anybody who can help me get this straightened out.

Sometimes I Hate Computers

Posted on 29th January 2009 by Kristy in stupid computer,technology - Tags: , ,

I’ve been having a ridiculous amount of computer problems. I had a virus scare yesterday, because my computer went haywire when I booted it up. A window popped up saying that I couldn’t download that file because of security settings, but I wasn’t trying to download a file. Then my computer decided that it would be prudent to shut down, purportedly for some totally unrelated reason.

I had a ton of work to do, but I restarted, pulled the plug on my DSL and started a virus scan. It takes about 2 1/2 hours on this beast, so I cleaned house while I waited. But AVG didn’t find anything.

So I set about checking all of the processes that were running, looking up any unfamiliar ones. Nothing out of the ordinary. I finally decided that it must have been some program I had blocked because it froze up my computer trying to update itself, because the computer was acting normal (considering) by then. And it’s been known to pull stunts like shutting down every now and then, and it had been a while since it had done so.

There are times when I miss my old Commodore 64. Remember those? Man, were they ever slow. But that was par for the course back then, so although it was a bit annoying, I got over it. You could even get primitive tape drives for them that used audio cassettes! I never had one, but from what I hear they were slow as the dickens too.

Of course I had my share of frustrations out of old Commodore too. Sometimes I would accidentally hit the wrong key, and it would tell me to “press play on tape.” I couldn’t do that because I had no tape drive, but it wouldn’t let me do anything else. So I would have to restart, and if I was trying to play programmer (which I often did in my younger days), I would lose everything I had done so far. But at least it didn’t take long to boot up and get started again.

I guess I should be grateful that computers are easier to use and capable of doing more today. And if I had one that was worth a hoot, I would.

Wishful Thinking

Posted on 18th December 2008 by Kristy in Uncategorized, home life, stupid computer

I was browsing eBay a lot there for a while, looking for deals on things I wanted to get Pumpkin for Christmas. I got her the main thing I was hoping for- a LeapFrog Didj. But I also found myself looking for something that I want (need, actually) for myself: A new computer.

I’d love to be able to go out and pay cash for a brand spanking new Sony Vaio laptop, but that’s not an option. So I’ve been searching for less expensive options. I found a tower that has all the power and features I should need for $299. As much as I would like a laptop, I may have to go with another desktop due to price concerns. I don’t think this one is going to hold out much longer.

There’s no way I can get any kind of computer right now. Maybe when we get our taxes back. I had planned to use that money to pay down the loan on my truck, but Hubby has already staked his claim on enough money to buy a hunting rifle. Maybe I’ll just use some of it for myself too.

Beyond Frustrated

Posted on 14th October 2008 by Kristy in home life, stupid computer

I have had it with this computer. It’s driving me nuts. I’ve shown great restraint in not putting my fist through the screen today.

MS Word finally started mysteriously working fairly well again. That’s great, but what gives??? Why would it just crap out and then suddenly decide to start functioning as it should out of the blue? Because my computer is psychotic, that’s why.

Every time I try to do anything else important, however, the system just totally spazzes out on me. It took me nearly 20 minutes just to transfer a voice file from my daughter’s MP3 player, and 15 more to email it. And it was a very time-sensitive thing, so my computer probably cost me what was at stake.

I’m at my wits end with this. It’s frustrating me to the point that it’s adversely affecting my concentration, which I don’t have much of anyway. And there’s not a thing I can do about it right now.

Okay, I’m done ranting now. Must attempt to get back to work, if this piece of junk will let me get anything done.
